Dhanteras 2024: Significance, Date, and Rituals to Bring Prosperity and Good Health

Dhanteras, also called Dhanatrayodashi, is a significant Hindu festival that initiates the Diwali festivities in India. The word "Dhanteras" blends two Sanskrit terms— ‘Dhan,’ meaning wealth, and ‘Teras,’ which denotes the 13th day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik. This year, Dhanteras 2024 will be joyfully celebrated on October 29, as Hindus come together to seek blessings for prosperity, health, and the well-being of their families.

Historical Significance of Dhanteras 2024

Dhanteras finds its roots in Hindu mythology, centered on Lord Dhanvantari and the legendary churning of the ocean, known as Samudra Manthan. As the story goes, on this day, Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and medicine, emerged from the ocean holding a pot of amrita, the nectar of immortality. Worshiping him on Dhanteras is believed to bring blessings of good health and wellness. The festival also honours Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, to welcome blessings of abundance and financial well-being.
